Older Doesn't Mean Wiser

Thank author of this post/commentI just find it laughable and irritating at the same time as to how some older folks who should know better doesn't know better. What I am trying to say is that, there are a few people I have encountered who should have been reputable and a role model for the younger generations who are the ones breaking all the rules and setting the bad example.

Here in the Philippines a rule has long been implemented (or has it really?) that smokers should respect the preference of non-smokers in various public areas like in transportation (jeep) and kids areas. But here I saw an old woman who can already be my grandmother puffing smoke inside the jeep. A signage inside the jeep was already visible and in front of her but she just kept on puffing that smoke. I am irritated with cigar smoke as I am a non-smoker and consider inhaling second hand smoke more dangerous than puffing it yourself. But I also grew up with the value to respect your elders, and the conflict came there. In the end, I let her be and decided to just cover my mouth with a handkerchief.

Well you cannot expect everyone to follow the rules. For there will always be those who just finds it hard to stick on what are to be done and what the society deemed to be acceptable.

And with these kind of attitude and way of thinking, these kind of people are risking not only themselves, but the welfare of other people as well.

This is the sad part, and once done, it would be hard to undo the effects.

I too was taught a good moral lesson to respect the elders, but what I was also taught about is to never mislead people and correct them if this will help them. If I were in that particular situation, I would still be respectful towards her but will ask her to stop smoking as what the sign says and that I am not good with second hand smoke. I think with proper execution even the most stubborn of old people will listen to a younger more wiser individuals.
